String-pulling
Is Jimbo's power truly unlimited?
Theoretically, yes. In practice, of course, Jimbo will not be interested in playing God over the wiki, because this would destroy the encyclopedia he believes in. We don't have to fear that the developers or the board will actually bypass the community—they'd kill the goose laying the golden eggs
The only point is that they could. The developers ultimately control all access to the database; the foundation (and by extension the board) ultimately controls the physical resources of the project. Though Wikipedia's independence is continuously increased, the buck must always stop somewhere, and even a well-meaning group of professionals have the potential to make catastrophic decisions.

The only loophole is the possibility of forking. If something truly disastrous happened to Wikipedia, then we could simply set up a new one, using the content of the old one, which can never be withheld. Since forking is a very expensive operation (in all ways imaginable) the event sparking it needs to be so serious that it a significant part of the community wants to put the effort into a fork. It's happened in the beginning with the Spanish Wikipedia, some of whose contributors didn't agree with the then-current power structure, but this was when there was little to fork (and efforts are still underway to undo it). The effort needed to make a fork of the English Wikipedia successful would be Herculean, and the developers and the board therefore have a lot of leeway to do considerable damage to Wikipedia if they insisted on bypassing the community on something—which, of course, they don't, as I explained above. JRM 04:53, 17 Apr 2005 (CDT)

: Well, there you go. Power tremendous; power awesome; but not power unlimited. I cannot imagine that matters will go to that extreme. I just think it is time we, as a community, grow up a little and take responsibility for our own actions. As you say, Jimbo and the Board seem to have little interest in the internal organiziation of the community -- or at least prefer to watch, rather than interfere. It's time for an experiment in open government. I am just wandering are you sure that articles about AI should stay on this Anarchopedia (Meta) and not on English version? Unlike (English) Wikipedia, it is OK to keep even personal essays on (English) Anarchopedia. While Meta is the right place for organizational issues of Charter, I think that English Anarchopedia is a better place for encyclopedic and similar articles... This is just an advice.

Willy on Wheels: Orcs moved to Orcs on wheels: Anarchy Rules!!!

English Wikipedia User Xiong coined the Tolkienesque term "orc" to describe a somewhat trollish user with unusual qualities of cleverness, persistence, and flexibility.

Orcs may or may not oppose trolls; they do not troll as intensely as a common troll. An orc masquerades as a genuine user, and may even make an occasional substantial contribution. An orc may fight a troll, or even another orc, hoping to steal the mantle of a knight; but often merely plods along in a groupthink vein, playing to the crowd, gathering support by acting with the mob, and occasionally looking to see where the mob is going -- and getting there first. He hopes to build up a reserve of public trust based on his frequent appearances on the "right" side of battles against straw men. He may thus acquire cat's paws or sparewheels. This is the orc's "passive mode".

When the orc shifts gears into "active mode", he fastens upon some object -- usually another user, but perhaps a group of users or an abstract concept -- and attempts to eradicate him, them, or it. He is unusually persistent and flexible in his attacks. Unlike trolls who generally "ignore all rules" except the most clearly established (since "rules" are so easily manipulated by orcs themselves - see below), the orc treads the edge of the acceptable, attempting to drag his opponent to this unsafe battleground. A successful orc attack is completed when his victim, not the orc, finally crosses the line into sanctionable action (c.f. MeatBall:Sucker Punch and ). But absent this satisfaction, the orc persists until he exceeds community tolerance.

Another feature of the orc is his fascination with policy. He avoids substantive contribution and manipulates policy to his own ends. His flexibility is key. When stymied at one point, he goes to higher ground, looking for some policy that can be creatively twisted to support his vendetta. He fades in and out of active and passive modes, from direct attack to subversion of process. If he perceives a gray area, he pushes it as far as it will go; then he switches sides and pushes there, too, until nothing is left but a fine line between right and wrong.

The real danger of the orc is not that he destroys other users; users can be replaced. It is not that he vandalizes articles, policies, and tools; they can be rebuilt.

The orc, by playing constantly in the gray area between "okay" and "not okay", forces the community to resort ever more frequently to formal procedure, tribunal, and written, explicit policy. That might almost be a Good Thing, but a social group founded on more or less anarchic principles maintains its integrity via meatball:SoftSecurity, which depends on some shared self-image and a certain level of mutual trust. Orderly anarchy, as opposed to chaos, depends on members working to avoid testing limits and provoking contention. By forcing the group, bit by bit, to adopt strict methods to exclude bad actions, the orc destroys orderly anarchy and replaces it with a slapped-together mess of improvisation -- ad-hocracy at its worst - which is easily manipulated by other orcs.

Orcs have a symbiotic relationship with martinets, who strive to create an atmosphere of rules, obediance, and structure as an end in itself. Some manage to be both at once.

The Orc's destruction cannot be reverted. Once that mutual trust is destroyed, there is no way to regain it; once resort to authority replaces shared consensus, it becomes the first resort in all cases. This social glue is precious and fragile, and the orc erodes it by his every act.

Thus the orc is the most dangerous of all troublesome users.

Willy on Wheels: Talk:Faction moved to Talk:Faction on wheels: Anarchy Rules!!!

In Anarchopedia, there is currently 10 existing identifying factions. (faction bar)
The following proposal deals with making these ten factions Administrative-Political factions of Anarchopedia.

See also Talk:Tendency for a proposal that would make a lesser kind of faction involuntary, to help users sort out the bias in what they read.

For identifying purposes, each user should be associated with one (prefferably only one) faction. The factions should internally choose their own power structure, yet each faction should be accosiated with one user, it's leader. Not leader in the sense of telling people what to do and what not to do, but leader in the sense of representative. Each faction should also ideally be represented with a symbol, that allows visual recognition. (A simple example is a stylized tree for the greens, or the hammer and sicle for the reds.) To encourage growth, then, competition. Whenever a page is edited by a user, (exept for a minor edit or, of course, delete), the page is associated with the user's faction. (A possible usage of this would be to replace or (preferrably) merge the black star with the faction symbol.)

Secondly, on polls affecting sitewide issues, that allows for the wideness of alternatives, all alternatives should be brough forward within a faction, and then voted upon with a free vote. Sitewide contests, were applicable, should also be handled factionwise.

Administrative-Political factions is not a tool for reducing democracy on the site, but a tool for simplifying management. Additionally, unregistered users are faction-free, and since unregistered users cannot be barred from the site, neither should it be required to join a faction, merely recomended. A good place for choosing factions would be the preferences panel, with "Undecided" being the default, and explanatory links where applicable. This would involve making a new set of special sites, and a new database field?

Voting suggested, as is implementation while language splits and users are few.

--Anni 07:59, 5 Jan 2005 (CST)

Leaders? Factions?
I don't like this, and I've said it before. I don't like the idea of factions at all, and I believe if they exist, they shouldn't be anarchopedia-sanctioned. If people wanna get totgether and make the, great, but otherwise, why should we force political party structures on an anarchist site? Let people coalesce on their own if they wanna form these things, not have a central force organize them like this.

Furthermore, the idea of representation is antithetical to Anarchism. We believe in delegates, elected to implement specific decisions that have already been made by the collective, for a very short and limited term. Not leaders or representatives, who are elected and then make decisions of their own accord.

I think we should abolish the factions and let people form them as they see fit, as the site grows, not build them for them. As for the edits thing, I don't think it's necessary once factions do appear, people can just put a template on their user pages that links them to the faction, and people can tell their bias like that.--Che y Marijuana 17:38, 5 Jan 2005 (CST)

Clarification
As I mentioned, this is not forcing a party structure on anyone. Anyone who is, or wants to be, an anarchist, can merely fly the No-Faction banner. Also, this is not leader, more of a representative or front figure. The identity of the party so to speak. Of course, this particular part is not strictly neccessary. Also, the leader does not need to be a permanent figure.

Secondly, not all users on the sites are in fact anarchists. (If I were to lable myself, I would be Pink or Green, go figure.) Some are interested in the dictionary part, some are intrested merely in helping the site grow. Of course, all nonanarchists could move of and found a "Democrapedia", a testing ground for Democratic developement, but is there really a need? I think that Anarchopedia could easily, and should be the most colorful dictionary on the net.

:Actually, there are many advocates of democratic wiki governance at Wikipedia, (the most prominent right now being probably English Wikipedia Users David Vasquez, and perhaps Adam Carr and Xed) even if they are currently drowned out by technologically-empowered "sysops". Even more interesting, web services like DoWire.org are now paying a lot of attention to the GFDL corpus and its evolution.

In closing, I would like to say that the factions are not hardset, and there is no demands or requirements for entering them. They should also not be used for collective punishment, because this goes against the very concept of Anarchopedia.

Strictly speaking, the dictionary itself is not tied to Anarchy, it's users and content is. As the non-anarchic part of it grows, so should the choise of identities for the users. --Anni 20:40, 5 Jan 2005 (CST)

Alt. proposal
See Anarchopedia:en:direct democracy for a trollish proposal to work as much as possible on direct democracy principles, taking into account the limits of same.

Direct democracy is fine when the issue is well-defined, though, it almost always takes a lot of work by factions to clarify the "sides", and get people to care, or decide what their real values are. Subjecting complex issues to a vote without some deliberative democracy and some factional struggle to clarify issues and points of difference, almost always results in a very bad outcome based only on emotional reaction. There's also the issue of when to hold a vote, what degree of quorum should apply - for more serious decisions one would require more than simple majority, up to and including consensus decision making methods.

Factions and so on
The question is: Who can say what is sanctioned on Anarchopedia? Me? Or some other contributor? I don't think so. I don't think even that anyone or any group on Anarchopedia can say what is sanctioned here. Because sanction is not anarchism.

I don't expect that we would be in the situation where we count faction votes: Greens said "yes", Blues said "no", Gnus said "yes"... It is not anarchism, too.

But, if someone likes to talk only with Pinks, let (s)he talk only with them.

If someone want to make communication at Anarchopedia through factions, let (s)he try. If someone other doesn't want to talk in that way, (s)he can ignore that. Also, (s)he can make some other proposal for the way how to communicate at Anarchopedia. And it should be on the main page, too.

I would like not to build Anarchopedia with liberals, fascists or Stalinists. Also, I don't think that liberals, fascists and Stalinists want to build anarchist encyclopedia :) But criticism of anarchism is also welcome. Of course, bullshit like "Somalia is the example of anarchism" is welcome only in section "bullshits". (Or, if we want to be "civilized" in the section "some lies about anarchism" or something like that.)

But, emotional anarchist speech is not welcome, too; i.e., if someone wants to write about Franco or George Bush, (s)he should not write something like "this asshole, Gorge Bush" or even "Franco is guilty for the beginning of the WWII" or any other nonsense. (Look at the North America article at :eng: as an example of emotional speech which should be removed.)

And, the most important thing: I think that Anarchopedia should be encyclopedia of their contributors. I would like that it would be an anarchist encyclopedia, encyclopedia for anarchist and the place where anarchist should test how to make anarchy. (Also, I want to be a part of such Anarchopedia, not some other.) But, if Anarchopedia becomes main stream liberal encyclopedia or "anarcho"-capitalist encyclopedia, or ... -- it would be a defeat of anarchist community (as well as me as a part of that community), not a defeat of Anarchopedia.

But, I think that Anarchopedia would not be a defeat of anarchist community. Friends from FAU took :deu: and take a care about it :) I hope we would have similar communities on :eng:, :fra:, :spa:, etc. --Milos Rancic 19:40, 8 Jan 2005 (CST)

Reproposal
As I realize that having a number of factions set in stone by the site, I will change my suggestion to Millosh. Rather than a number of factions, to set up a framework for creating and maintaining factions. Factions should not be required, of course, nor should they be a tool of collective punishment. As mentioned elswhere, Anarchy is not just about yourself, it's also needed to learn to deal with people with oppinions different from your own. And while Anarchopedia is an encyclopedia about Anarchism, it should also be a tool for people that are not necesarrily anarchists. --Anni 04:25, 9 Jan 2005 (CST)
::As it is, however, my ideas requires me to be a developer (which I am not) or get help from a developer, because I need (want) to make a number of "special" pages, that automatically generates the user lists of the existing factions taken from database fields, and an addition to the the preference panel that allows users to populate the database with their choises of the existing factions (or create new ones?). I cannot do this on my own. --Anni 03:00, 14 Jan 2005 (CST)

Willy on Wheels: Faction moved to Faction on wheels: Anarchy Rules!!!

One good user-land definition of a faction is "those who disagree violently with others, but only non-violently with each other."

In wiki management, a faction is a mandatory clique to deal with alleged and collective identity problems that can't otherwise be sorted out without serious privacy problems, e.g. authorizing outing. The Wikipedia red faction is the most obvious declared public example.

A faction system may extend an interwiki link standard but deals with assertions of common cause or common identity among many users who are not necessarily declaring themselves as allied, and not sharing one IP number or login, or who may avoid logins entirely, e.g. troll organizations.

Factions already exist as a group of users sharing a single account or using anonymous proxy services to reuse IP numbers and appear to be just one persistent troll or something. This can actually work better for some things than any permission-based model, but it gives an edge to those who have figured out how to do it reliably. It also makes it hard for any limits to be put on such activity.

So, there may be user groups that are answerable only to each other and not to the management, which only manages the conflicts between factions, rather like it also tries to stay out of conflicts between users and just play referee:

A faction competes with other factions, and has a tendency to view some things the same way - it may formally cooperate or list some values or principles. It has its own view of the glossary. Any funded trolls advancing a view implies there must be a faction with that view - maybe not one that Anarchopedia:Itself can see.

Often it is assigned a colour on the political spectrum.

Two factions are currently directly supported by the wiki software itself, those being developers and sysops. These have, as a consequence of the software itself, powers to label and identify others as vandals (those who damage or delete pages or insert erroneous assertions). There are also trolls (who annoy other users but may be doing so for legitimate political or social reasons, i.e. not simple vandals). It is rather hotly contested whether there is any one faction of trolls, whether trolls cooperate in factions already, etc..

Ordinary governance and wiki management also leads directly to certain factions coming into existence by default. Anarchopedia:We (including at least those who contribute to accepted Anarchopedia:Policy which stands), Anarchopedia:Enemy (including at least those doing vandalism such as ad hominem delete) and Anarchopedia:Trolls (engaged in controversial actions and leading to discussion of their activities, and perhaps intentions) exist whether we care to admit they exist or not. We also have some obligation to anticipate Friendly English Wikipedia Users who might become a faction or advocacy group helping coordinate Wikipedia with what "we" do.

One way or another, like it or not, there is reference to these collective entities in all large public wikis, and so there should be some formal support for creating arbitrary factions that actually represent the complexity of the social and political situation around the GFDL text corpus and the many point of view and user role differences involved. Factions would require some accountability, slowing down decisions on factionally defined terms like picket terms (like "pro-choice" and "baby murder" which you will never hear from "the other side"), and other political virtues and peacemaking tactics. Though it might just be one more thing to fight about.

Three models of dealing with this have been proposed, and one attempted:

* A GodKing who simply serves as the court of last resort, "master of truth and justice" (Michel Foucault's term for the role of the Western academic), and is probably trusted by, or is, "the owner of" a GFDL corpus access provider. This is used at Wikipedia. It has had some success in getting a lot of text contributed. It seems to be less successful in getting rid of systemic bias or removing irreponsible sysops. Also, few GodKings speak every natural language! Some suggest that a GodKing doing nothing is one of the best models, called lazy tyranny, and that it is inaction rather than action that has led to the success of Wikipedia so far.

* A faction system modeled on representative democracy as carried out in all democracies, where an edit stands or falls based on the willingness of some substantial faction of like-minded users to support it. These compete with other factions in a power structure to contain the more bureaucratic and police-like sysop power structure. This seems to have potential to simplify debate on extremely contentious issues in the same way that parties do so in countries.

::This is the proposal that probably most suits Anarchopedia:Itself.

* A phyle system similar to that described by Neal Stephenson in his book The Diamond Age. As Metaweb is overtly an implementation of the Young Lady's Illustrated Primer from that same book, it seems entirely likely and useful that it would attempt to implement this variation of the faction. A phyle differs from a faction in various ways but mostly that it is defines an etiquette of its own and discourages informal interaction with those of other phyles, and typically takes revenge in extralegal ways if it is seriously offended (unlike a faction which is expected to work through some common bureaucratic or electoral process). See Metaweb:phyle for more details on this.

::Because it implies Neal Stephenson's model, Metaweb will likely move in this direction, and attempt to model Stephenson's phyles as factions instead of letting them develop directly from politics as usual.

See also: faction bar

Feedback
Are there other options? If there is no formal faction recognition, what is the check on the power of Anarchopedia:Sysops? Does failure to support factions imply that there must be a GodKing?

----

I think that institutionalizing factions would perpetuate conflict based on faction loyalty, rather than promoting debate and understanding of the subject of disagreement. Some factions would dominate and others would be marginalized. This is similar to the way that a couple of parties in many countries bicker about trivia, while ignoring important issues.

 Subject: Name space, different languages

It seems that we should work according to interwiki standard. But, we
should find some way to have one community, not divided into
languages.

I am trying to make script for opening Anarchopedia in other languages
(in this moment you can find start of my work in
/srv/www/virtual/org.anarchopedia/langs). It is not so hard to make
script for creation virtual hosts and copying contents of one blank
Anarchopedia to some place. But, we need to find how can all
Anarchopedias ask for users at the same place. Maybe, we should test
it with en.anarchopedia.org?

I'll copy this mail into Anarchopedia:en:administration. (Let's
talk there.) Maybe you have some better idea?

:I think that, at least for now, we should keep everything in one wiki. We only have ~200 articles and 3-5 active contributors. Wikis can easily become nothing more than farms for linkspammers if no one is around to monitor them. We should consider this once we become larger and more popular. Guanaco 02:29, 19 Oct 2004 (UTC)
::OK, but we should have some way for migration in the future... With keeping all of linked pages from outside. --Millosh 13:53, 21 Oct 2004 (UTC)
::One more question: I think it is reasonable to open only few Anarchopedias in different language (Spanish, French, Italian...). And if someone wants to work in other language, (s)he would need to ask at some page here. What do you and others think about that? --Millosh 07:19, 22 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Dividing Anarchopedia into language projects
*Script in Perl for generation virtual host.
*We should do:
#New virtual hosts: en, de, es, eo, fr, ia, ie, zb. With question (down). (Millosh)
#*I (Millosh) think we should put it together: If Anarchopedia root is /srv/www/virtual/org.anarchopedia/htdocs, then we should make directory /srv/www/virtual/org.anarchopedia/langs/ where we should put document roots: /srv/www/virtual/org.anarchopedia/langs/{en,de,es,eo,fr,ia,ie,zb,www}.
::Just thought that you might want to hear my two cents on the issue... I would agree with millosh that "fair use" is crap, since that usually means that in one country it is ok, and in others it is not. The problem with abandonning GPL is that many articles will need to be rewritten completely from scratch, but it is a good idea over all. I would suggest requesting from users to release everything in pd, and then when we actually have enough articles, then you can go and start redoing those grabbed from wikipedia, and placing them in pd completely.

Willy on Wheels: Anarchopedia:en:point of view moved to Anarchopedia:en:point of view on wheels: Anarchy Rules!!!

Point of view, often abbreviated POV, is a subjective stance or perspective on a given topic.

linguistic view
In linguistics, it is the 'position', in some sense, of the 'subject' of a sentence. For instance, to say "the dog is green" is to say that someone has observed something, identified it as "the dog," whichever dog that is, and compared it to the memory of the spectrum "green", and decided it is close enough to "the same" to use the word "is" to describe the relationship. All of these decisions are part of the point of view. Usually point of view is described as:

*First person, i.e. "Seeing that the dog is green, I decide to wash it."
*Second person, i.e. "You say the dog is green? Can I believe that?"
*Third person, i.e. "Joey and Tom agreed that the dog is green."

A neutral point of view involves trying to assign all statements to a third person authority, i.e. "A says B about C." The Wikipedia tries to employ this point of view. But it does not solve all problems. It requires one to appeal often to credentialism and perhaps professionalism, e.g. "Professor A said, on the record, B about the scientific view of C". Without a vast array of agreements that constitute a systemic bias of its own, there is no real way to adhere to this 'neutral' view, and many simply disregard it. The Meta-Wikipedia often debates the problems arising from this strategy.

Natural point of view, as in the idea of natural law, is often the result of choosing a particular science, e.g. particle physics or ecology, or even economics as expressed in biology ("food chains" etc.) and deciding that all of reality can be evaluated from it. Buddhism and Taoism idealize the approach to such a point of view, but admit it is hard or impossible to achieve, and definitely impossible to reliably communicate to a human being. Accordingly claiming this point of view can be a power grab, e.g. the many claims to have found a Biological Basis of Morality.

Multiple point of view is the compromise, but necessitates what is called (often disdainfully) "politics as usual": the division of participants into factions if only to agree on vocabulary and etiquette and at least some simple view of ethics and morals, if not the formal method for evaluating and quantifying ethicality and morality of human actions long sought in vain by philosophers and theologians.

In addition to these 'spatial' variations, there are also 'temporal' or 'tense' variations in point of view. In English there is a past tense ("saw the dog"), present tense ("see the dog"), future perfect ("will see the dog") and future imperfect ("might see the dog", "could see the dog", "may see the dog"). In French there are separate tenses for backfilling facts incidental to the action (e.g. Bush adminstration claims to care about finding any weapons of mass destruction in Iraq) and for actually advancing the action (e.g. Bush administration desire to discover any new dangerous technology they think may be more advanced than their own). In Japanese there is sensitivity to the status of the speaker and listener. These differences in linguistic tense imply a point of view, suspectibility or immunity to certain propaganda techniques, e.g. one might expect the Japanese to fall more often for credentialism or at least not challenge views presented with credentials, while one might expect the French not to accept, e.g. the "logic of war" when presented as obvious rationalization for an already-made decision.

Alfred Korcybski in his General Semantics theory pointed out that the verb "to be" hides a great many divergences in point of view, and that the terms becomes, remains and equals were far more exact and placed one more exactly in a temporal frame. One was less likely to make easy-to-abuse claims for-all-time, i.e. a dogma.

Literary view
In literature, the point of view, or viewpoint (see perspective for the more general and visual sense of this term), expresses the related experience of the narrator - not that of the author. Authors expressly cannot, in fiction, insert or inject their own voice, as this challenges the suspension of disbelief. Texts encourage the reader to identify with the narrator, not with the author.

Literary narration can occur from the first-person, second-person or third-person point of view. In a novel, first-person commonly appears: I saw ... We did.... In self-help or business writing, the second person (addressing "you") predominates: you must..., thou shalt.... In an encyclopedia or textbook narrators often work in the third-person (that happened..., the king died.... For additional vagueness, imprecision and detachment, some writers employ the passive voice (it is said that the president was compelled to be heard....

The ability to use viewpoint effectively provides one measure of someone's writing ability. The writing markschemes used for National Curriculum assessments in England reflect this: they encourage the awarding of marks for the use of viewpoint as part of a wider judgement regarding the composition and effect of the text.

usage in wikis
When the abbreviation "POV" is used in wiki rhetoric when talking about an article, it usually means that the article has perceived bias. That is, the author has inserted what is overtly their own view, rather than citing authorities or evidence as a neutral point of view would advise. This however is itself a subjective determination, and the serious problems that arise when it is enforced by a small clique have become obvious on Wikipedia and other large public wikis. Among other things, there is no consistent standard of evidence required of popular vs. unpopular views.

The other conceptions of point of view above are also sometimes mentioned, along with culture biases such as the UKPOV or USPOV or EPOV, implying a UK-centric, US-centric, or English-speaking-world-centric view, respectively.

For recommendations on avoiding a personal point of view when editing pages, see how to edit pages. For recommendations on avoiding political or other biaes, see political dispute, terminology dispute, identity dispute.

In real life, anarchist groups do not let authoritarian, right-wing people come in and disrupt their meetings. In the same manner, we should not do so here. This crosses over everything - admin powers, banning, page edits and whatnot. I think a bar has to be set. How high or how low can be argued, but it has to be set. I think authoritarian users would be more happy at Wikinfo anyway. And they can come here as well, as long as they're not here to disrupt things. Indymedia does the same thing, it began very open, and then decided to finally stop authoritarian right-wing people from disrupting the site. They don't go far enough for me on some locals, but some of that is a technology issue. If they had a Slashdot like moderation system I could just ignore comments by the idiots there, and they could be as free to post them as I am to not read them.

I am all in favor of a loose system, where power is distributed, but we need a group that trusts each other, and which is very friendly and empowering to newcomers. But we also must realize that some authoritarian people will create scripts to automatically delete and lock every page if that is allowed. There is a balancing act, and we can err on the side of freedom. But a line should be drawn from people trying to build this site and tear it down. Lance Murdoch 10:03, 21 Oct 2004 (UTC)

:I was thinking a lot about anti-hierarchy on Anarchopedia. And I think that solution is not to make power structure if we don't need it. We need maintaince, but we don't need to make other kinds of hierarchy. User:Live and let Troll said very good that "the last emergency act" of users against authoritarian maintainers can be getting database dumps and putting it at some less authoritarian place. If we don't have other kinds of hierarchy, all users are equal and we can use principles of direct democracy. If we have someone really destructive on Anarchopedia maintainers can defend Anarchopedia. But, let's talk about that when we find someone really destructive. If we can communicate with person with destructive tendencies, if we can find some solution so that person wouldn't be destructive anymore, there are no needs for "defending Anarchopedia".
:Also, if someone wants to become a maintainer, there are no a lot of "recommendations" for that. (S)he needs to know how to maintain and (s)he needs some personal references in colaborative work. And of course, (s)he needs to be an anarchist or a person which wants to work under anarchist principles :) --Millosh 12:23, 21 Oct 2004 (UTC)
Answer:
You can't. If you are unable to make your peace with that fact, then you have
no business trying to maintain a Wiki, let alone an Anarchist Wiki!! - lyberty 23:21, 25 Jan 2005 (CST)

Also, you might want to consider archiving the "open letter" somewhere, and creating
an actual, updated encyclopedia definition of the Anarchopedia:sysop policy (including, if you wish,
things that were considered when making the policy). - lyberty 23:21, 25 Jan 2005 (CST)
:Article Anarchopedia:en:sysops in this moment is (one of) the place(s) where we can talk about organization of collaborative work on Anarchopedia. A lot of questions are open and some of them will be solved when we make some community (i.e. a group of persons who are interested to take a place in managing Anarchopedia). Also, articles in the name space under "Anarchopedia:" are not encyclopedic (as well as Meta is not encyclopedia: Meta is the place for coordination; :eng: is encyclopedia). I think I said a lot of time that I have ethical problem because Anarchopedia's domains and servers are "my" in the sense of capitalist relations in the world. But, I don't want that Anarchopedia is "my project". In the sense of anarchist organization it should be the project of Anarchopedia's contributors. Do you have an idea how to implement anarchist organization in managing Anarchopedia? --Milos Rancic 09:57, 26 Jan 2005 (CST)

Ideas about the management of Anarchopedia / soliciting perspectives
As of October, 2004, all (registered) users on Meta-Anarchopedia are sysops. In the context of anarchism and Anarchopedia, a "sysop" is a maintainer, not an authority.

Anarchopedia is small, and doesn't have more then ten contributors (as of 2004/10/03). Contributors have a very meta question: 'How can we know that the founder is not, himself, authoritarian, or that he doesn't have some other inclinations that are in conflict with the general principles of anarchism and the declared principles of Anarchopedia?' Perhaps it is possible to guess (or even know) after some time of collaborative work, but it is not at the beginning.

I (Millosh) have a difficult position as the founder and primary maintainer of the operating system where Anarchopedia exists. (The position would be very good if the project was based on hierarchical relations, but...) So I want to find the model: how can we organize our work? I have some very basic ideas, but I release that all of them may present big problems:

1. The simplest, and most ethically unambiguous solution would be to
::(1) give sysop permissions to all of contributors;
::(2) move Anarchopedia to some server where all contributors can have admin permissions on the operating system; and
::(3) find some (directly democratic) way for administration of the Internet domain(s).
:The problem with this approach: How can we be sure that all contributors want what is best for Anarchopedia?
2. The second option is to give all permission to only that group of people who have my (or each other's) confidence. The main problem of this model is potentially creation of oligarchy or leninist "revolutionary vanguard". We don't want either an oligarchy or a revolutionary vanguard.

3. The third way is to keep all of permissions to myself as "keeper" of Anarchopedia. But, this is de facto enlightened absolutism, which is opposite to anarchist principles.

I understand that we can find some kind of model which would be the nearest to the second choice (with bigger group of mainainers) and with... Actually, if we are talking only about sysop privileges on Meta-Anarchopedia, the solution is simple: All of the contributors will have sysop permissions (if the persion is destructive, taking permissions back is easily done). We need to find solution "only" for the last two questions.

Please, let's talk about two questions: (1) control of servers where Anarchopedia exists and (2) control of Anarchopedia's domains (anarchopedia.org, anarchopedia.net, anarchopedia.info; about AnarchApedia females should talk there.

The Troll perspective
Infrastructure owner's trust is the only reason most sysop power structures have any power at all. Whoever "owns the computers and the domain name" chooses personal friends to exercise arbitrary power over everyone else.

On Anarchopedia:Itself, we hope that the infrastructure owners will be committed to keeping Anarchopedia:Policy and even who Anarchopedia:We are open to constant challenge and edit. The New Troll point of view and Anarchopedia:Lowest Troll ideologies suggest that outsiders must have more power than insiders. So maybe you get powers until you abuse them, but then lose them VERY quickly and find it almost impossible to get them back, since, new volunteers will be getting them first? or something like that.

On most wikis, the term "sysops" is equivalent to power structure. This is because the sysops manage (control) the wiki. On Anarchopedia, the sysops should be limited to Anarchopedia:Cleaning duties, such as defending against Anarchopedia:Vandalism. Hence, on Anarchopedia, it is hoped that sysops will not be a power structure. This will require eternal vigiliance and permanent revolution on behalf of the user base, and if a power structure begins to emerge, the users will take their content and move elsewhere. Of course, the ideal would be to have no sysops, but this would leave Anarchopedia open to vandalism.

Anarchopedia:Trolls in general must agree that control of servers or domain names isn't that important, and it's very different to answer questions about developers and net admins than it is to answer questions about web admins like the sysops. Control on servers or domains is almost worthless if the GFDL corpus or some other free documentation license lets a new web service be set up easily, and googling for certain keywords lets you easily find it.

By contrast, insidious abuse of sysop powers (sysop vandalism) is much worse, because it prevents the actual GFDL corpus from being corrected, and may not even be noticed for a long time. Even sysop vigilantism is not as bad as that vandalism, since social exclusion of some Anarchopedia:Faction can just cause it to go somewhere else: as with Wikipedia factions, many of which left early to do something else. So controls on sysop vandalism are highest priority, as with all other vandalism - the only reason to need any kind of sysop.

Ask for permissions
All logged-in users have sysop access.

Willy on Wheels: Anarchopedia:en:direct democracy moved to Anarchopedia:en:direct democracy on wheels: Anarchy Rules!!!

While all kinds of things are said by any of us in Anarchopedia:Itself about politics and civics, the actual Anarchopedia:Policy should be set as much as possible by direct democracy. This suggests we mostly decide by Anarchopedia:Referenda.

seeking consensus
However, referendum questions don't arise from nowhere, and the language they employ is also not strictly neutral, and requires some buy-in and deliberate consultation and outreach to find consensus. Anarchopedia:Policy must accept "that it is possible to characterize disputes fairly, so that all the major participants will be able to look at the resulting text, agreeing that their views are presented sympathetically and as completely as possible (within the context of the discussion)." - one of only two assumptions shared with Wikipedia's "Neutral point of view". However, that doesn't make it easy:

This requires some consensus democracy and deliberative democracy and some elements even of representative democracy to make work. In most situations, these forms of democracy are preferable to voting systems:

*Consensus decision making should apply where a policy is constrained, where Anarchopedia:Advice is offered that needs to draw on everyone's knowledge and experience and instincts, or where we have a lot of time and not many people who care - such as the exact wording of some article that is not part of Anarchopedia:Policy. A consensus democracy may also be preferred within Anarchopedia:Factions to make joint decisions that affect only themselves. See below for some.

democracy frames disputes
*Deliberative democracy should apply to Anarchopedia:Questions such as the Anarchopedia:FAQ, or any other open-ended issue where we don't need to make any one decision fast. Bottom-up accumulation of Anarchopedia:Policy and ratification into what Anarchopedia is not can continue in this way until someone objects to or disputes a point. No factions required yet! Really this is what goes on, on talk pages.

*Direct democracy can be invoked directly as Anarchopedia:Referenda, in cases where it's generally agreed that the Anarchopedia:Question is clear, and the Anarchopedia:Advice offered about it has all been heard. Some voting system needs to be chosen for this. Please review them.

factions engage in disputes
The above should deal with 99% of cases, including overt political debates. The rest is for the other 1%, which include epistemology and ontology problems that just aren't resolvable without some formal dispute resolution:

To avoid generating some elaborate hierarchy like Wikipedia's "Arbitration", however, "we should characterize disputes rather than engage in them." - another assumption we share with Wikipedia's "neutral point of view". We only report disputes. To do so efficiently requires some work:

*Representative democracy starts to matter when disputes have arisen and are consistently recurring and there are so many people involved that no one has time to thoroughly understand each other in depth and must rely on some intermediaries and filters - this is when the Anarchopedia:Factions really are needed. Three functions that they can or should be called on to perform:

::An IP block ideally would be up to a user's own faction to decide - it's not something that should be done to one by an enemy who is not taking your political views into account. It should be your friends saying you've gone too far. If you have no friends, well, you are a faction unto yourself, and if you don't declare or state your agenda, maybe you're Anarchopedia:Enemy?

::Before any Anarchopedia:Referenda, each Anarchopedia:Faction should be called on to ratify the wording of the question at hand. Whether or not they have participated in the deliberations beforehand. If they at least have a chance to object that the question is politically slanted or wrongly stated, or that the time of the choice is related to some particular group's agenda, the odds that they will respect the will of the majority afterwards is higher.

:::Also, each faction may get a certain number of Anarchopedia:Referenda to propose, like one per month, to bring issues that they care about to the fore. A condition of this might be that the issue is very clearly stated so that there is no terminology dispute about what is actually being decided.

::When there is a dispute about the accuracy of reporting of a particular group's views or positions, the Anarchopedia:Faction that holds the most similar views should be the one that makes final decisions about the wording, as they are the ones most likely to make the most subtle distinctions that the other factions don't recognize or respect.

There are default factions created by software: Anarchopedia:Sysops and the Anarchopedia:Vandals they seek out and block IP of. Ideally this is all they do. Sysops should be people trusted by all non-vandal factions to decide what vandalism is, and they should lose that power if any faction disputes their judgment at all. Very few of these people are really needed:

Maybe just one Lowest Troll, implying that Anarchopedia:Trolls (those generally unconcerned with offending anyone, and perhaps somewhat eccentric) are the ones who must decide who they will, and won't, consider a troll not a vandal.

Followup
When there are more Anarchopedia:Recruits with personal experience in large public wikis to share, we should discuss the above. Ideally we'd involve at least two, maybe three, members of
each of the Anarchopedia:Greens, Anarchopedia:Golds, Anarchopedia:Blues, Anarchopedia:Reds, Anarchopedia:Pinks, Anarchopedia:Elves, Anarchopedia:Black bloc and Anarchopedia:Trolls. These are just names for sample Anarchopedia:factions that might get involved in the above eventually. They can change later.

See direct democracy, grassroots democracy, anticipatory democracy, participatory democracy and voting systems for more background on how to organize Anarchopedia:Policy democratically.

Anarchopedia intends to be a large public wiki. Accordingly it will need some policy and perhaps even a sysop power structure to manage itself.

Rather than apply some "absolute-sounding ethic" (even such a seemingly open and anarchically benevolent one as "troll-friendly") to develop any Anarchopedia policy, it seems advisable to rely mostly or only on what Anarchopedia, itself, says about its own purpose and mission. Then the items which are very widely shared, or clearly undesirable, can be listed as specific items of standing policy, or, rejected and listed under what Anarchopedia is not.

This method would seem to have at least the imperative integrity of direct democracy - it does not rely on any pre-existing ethical code or wiki ontology that is imposed or defined by anyone other than the ordinary participant. It gains its authority, if any, from the lack of objection or dispute to any policy, as long as there are no inhibitions against offering such objections.

Anarchopedia, itself makes claims about Anarchopedia, i.e. what it "is" or "is for":

* An encyclopedia of anarchism
* Anarchists' encyclopedia
* An experiment in anarchist large public wiki management . One of places on the Earth where anarchists can learn how to make anarchy.
* ...

These claims about itself guide the project. If a claim is made in even one place off to the side, it is important, and should be added to the above. If the claim is wrong, change it in the article it came from, and THEN change it here.

Mention of Anarchopedia, itself in articles requires some standards to ensure:

*Text need not change when moved elsewhere in the GFDL text corpus. If we refer to this project in the third person, as Anarchopedia, then the text stands up better when moved elsewhere in the GFDL text corpus. This should be a standard everywhere Anarchopedia, itself is mentioned within.

*Statements about "Anarchopedia is...", or "Anarchopedia does..." can be more easily found, closely examined, and disputed (by Factions or otherwise). This is absolutely necessary to achieve deliberative democracy, reflexive design and some positive brand management - we would not want strange claims or assertions about its purpose or character to go unexamined, and we would want to support any desirable role or purpose. This is simpler if 'what links here' is a comprehensive list. Accordingly, any mention that affects identity or defines or limits a purpose should be to Anarchopedia:Itself not Anarchopedia, to distinguish from casual mentions that do not make any such claims (e.g. what "Anarchopedia says..." about something that is not itself).

*It provides a positive counterpoint to what Anarchopedia is not, which is the negation of Anarchopedia:itself. But by definition can't define any progressive or positive mission! It's easier to keep "not" updated if "is and does" are up to date.

*It reminds people to update the Main Page occasionally and keep up to date with the most effective terminology to describe concepts under discussion.

what Anarchopedia is not may actually be more important to understand for daily operating and governance decisions.
