This is a logo for Operation Gladio in Italy post-WWII. A secret organization, Operation Gladio was code for a NATO sleeper cell, in the event of a Warsaw Pact invasion of Western Europe, and to conduct anti-communist actions. 'Gladio' is specific to the Italian section of the NATO stay-behind orgs, but "Operation Gladio" is used for all such orgs, & is sometimes referred to as "Super NATO". Gladius is a type of Roman short sword, pictured.
The manner extent and means of the CIA's involvement in Gladio operations, during the Cold War era and the Years of Lead right-wing terrorist attacks is the subject of debate and research to the present day
Use of the logo complies with fair use under United States copyright law: The image is used to identify the organization Operation Gladio, a subject of public interest.
